In a commentary published as part of The Straits Times’ Finding Joy series, SMU Associate Professor of Law Tan Seow Hon drew on American philosopher Robert Nozick’s “experience machine” to highlight that pleasure alone is insufficient, as humans seek authenticity, character, and real engagement with the world. She explained that while pleasure is often a fleeting response to circumstances, joy reflects a deeper understanding of happiness as human flourishing – one shaped by meaningful goals, the exercise of practical judgment, and the cultivation of character. She further observed that persevering in love, hope, and what one believes to be worthwhile can foster personal growth and lead to a deeper, more lasting joy beyond mere pleasure.
