
In a commentary, SMU Assistant Professor of Communication Management (Education) Sungjong Roh and Sam Ahmed, Managing Director of Swarm A.I. and Founder of Deriv Asia, discussed how artificial intelligence (AI) can significantly boost productivity, particularly for skilled white-collar workers. However, they warned that it may also widen inequality by benefiting those already equipped to harness it, while displacing lower-tier jobs. They highlighted concerns over the concentration of AI infrastructure among a few major tech firms, which could stifle innovation, create systemic risks, and drive strategic decisions – like job cuts – that disproportionately impact the broader workforce.
