As the world accelerates toward a net-zero future, energy leaders like Kevin Shen (SMU EMBA 2022) are at the forefront of pioneering solutions to drive sustainability efforts.
At ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, Kevin plays a crucial role in developing strategies to reduce carbon emissions and forge new energy pathways. His journey—from engineering to global business leadership—has been deeply shaped by his SMU Executive MBA (EMBA) experience, which equipped him with the strategic mindset and leadership skills to drive change in a rapidly evolving industry.
Championing low-carbon innovation
In his role at ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, Kevin conceptualises and evaluates regional business opportunities in hydrogen, carbon capture, and biofuels. His focus is finding solutions for industries that are traditionally hard to decarbonise, such as manufacturing, power, and transportation.
A significant local initiative is currently having an important role in a prospective Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) project. In March 2024, ExxonMobil, as part of a consortium, was selected by the Government of Singapore to assess a cross-border CCS initiative.
Reflecting on the complexities of energy transition, Kevin emphasises that “there is no one-size-fits-all solution for any country or industry. Each energy pathway must be tailored to a country’s natural resources and economic needs.” One must not forget that energy security (and supply reliability) is an existential need of every country.
His ability to navigate the intricacies of business, policies and engineering stems from a blend of technical expertise, strategic insights, and the leadership acumen honed during his time at SMU.
The SMU EMBA advantage: strategic thinking and leadership growth
Kevin credits the programme for shaping his business acumen, resilience, and ability to drive impactful change. “The concise 12-month programme helped me embrace business transformation and develop a continuous growth mindset,” he shares. Several courses left a lasting impact on his approach:
Corporate Finance and Green Finance equipped him with financial expertise crucial for securing capital for climate projects.
Crisis Leadership principles were directly applied when navigating the after-effects of the Russia-Ukraine war, amidst market volatility.
The Strategic Initiative Project (SIP) enhanced his problem-solving and adaptability when his team had to pivot mid-project due to unforeseen business closures—a real-world lesson in resilience and strategic agility.
The Leadership Lab and mentorship programme were particularly transformative, helping Kevin gain self-awareness, empathy, and a renewed sense of purpose in his career. These experiences have been invaluable as he drives low-carbon strategies while leading diverse, cross-functional teams.
Navigating challenges and shaping the future of energy
Kevin’s journey has not been without challenges. The energy sector is undergoing unprecedented changes, requiring leaders to constantly innovate and adapt to develop new business models and value chains. He recalls the uncertainty of pursuing his EMBA during the COVID-19 pandemic, balancing professional commitments with intensive coursework. However, the experience proved to be a career accelerator, giving him the confidence to take on three different roles in ExxonMobil in just two years.
Another milestone was leading first-ever innovation workshop for the shipping business, inspired by the "Innovation and Growth Management" course at SMU. The workshop united commercial and technical experts to brainstorm cutting-edge solutions for reducing maritime emissions—a testament to how academic insights can translate into real-world impact.
Advice for aspiring leaders and sustainability advocates
For those looking to build a career in energy transition, sustainability, or global business leadership, Kevin offers clear advice:
“Take the leap of faith and invest in yourself. The SMU EMBA will challenge and transform you—not just professionally, but personally. Build a strong support system, embrace new perspectives, and develop the resilience to navigate change.”
He also highlights the importance of lifelong learning. Even after graduation, Kevin joined an overseas study trip to Shanghai Jiao Tong University with the next SMU EMBA cohort to deepen his understanding of China’s energy policies, green technologies, and sustainable business models. This commitment to continuous learning ensures he remains at the cutting edge of global sustainability trends.
Lifelong connections and the power of the SMU network
Beyond the classroom, Kevin cherishes the lifelong friendships and professional network he built at SMU. The EMBA 11 cohort continues to support one another, meeting regularly to share ideas, celebrate wins, and navigate challenges together. In his words, “The camaraderie and peer learning were just as valuable as the coursework itself.”
As he looks to the future, Kevin remains dedicated to advancing climate solutions and mentoring the next generation of business leaders. His journey exemplifies the transformative power of education, innovation, and leadership in shaping a more sustainable world.
