In his commentary on the Maintenance of Racial Harmony Act, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan emphasised its crucial role in preserving Singapore’s racial harmony. He stressed the importance of transparent enforcement, vigilance against foreign interference, and adopting non-punitive approaches to address racial issues. Moreover, Assoc Prof Tan urged the Chinese community to play an active part in promoting racial inclusivity. He asserts that Chinese Singaporeans, as the majority ethnic group, bear the responsibility of ensuring inclusivity and preventing the marginalisation of minority groups. He appealed to all Singaporeans to engage actively in efforts to maintain racial harmony, particularly through their daily interactions, thereby fostering a more cohesive and inclusive society.
