SMU has announced the establishment of a new scholarship to support financially disadvantaged students in participating in international exchange programmes. The scholarship is funded by a $3 million donation from Mrs Margaret Chan and will provide 20 students annually with opportunities for overseas study. SMU stated that the Margaret Chan-Lien International Exchange Scholarship programme will officially launch in August 2025, coinciding with SMU’s 25th anniversary. Starting in Academic Year (AY) 2025/2026, the new scholarship programme will offer: 8 exchange scholarships annually, valued at S$5,000 each, for one semester of study at SMU’s partner universities in Asia; and 12 exchange scholarships annually, valued at S$10,000 each, for one semester of study at SMU’s partner universities outside of Asia. SMU President, Professor Lily Kong, noted the significance of Mrs Chan-Lien’s contribution to education and international experiences, stating, “I look forward to seeing the journeys that this scholarship will make possible, the impact on our students, as well as the impact our students will create, both at home and across the world.”
