In a commentary, Executive Director of SMU's Lien Centre for Social Innovation Steve Loh discussed how individuals can find more effective ways of contributing by assessing whether their donations and volunteering efforts are genuinely beneficial or potentially detrimental to the recipients. He mentioned that a 2021 study conducted in collaboration with The Food Bank Singapore and SMU's Lien Centre for Social Innovation found that families lacking access to adequate, nutritious food preferred supermarket vouchers over pre-selected food items, as vouchers provided them with some control over their food choices. Loh encouraged individuals to carefully evaluate the charities they support or volunteer with in order to understand the impact of their contributions and consider supporting initiatives and organisations that aim to empower the less fortunate in a sustainable manner.
