In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan discussed the importance for Singaporeans and companies operating in Singapore to understand why and how the country is impacted by geopolitics, as well as the imperative to protect its national interests on the global stage. He noted Singapore's principled foreign policy amid unsettling geopolitics, and highlighted the need for Singapore to remain a global city even as globalisation wanes and countries turn inwards and protectionist. Assoc Prof Tan noted the challenges Singapore faces but he believes that Singapore is well positioned to recover even with the inevitable ups and downs along the way.
