SMU, A*Star launch lab that aims to tackle national issues using AI

SMU and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) have established a joint lab in Social and Human-Centred Computing using expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and social sciences, to help Singapore address various social risks and challenges. With a total investment of S$10 million, the joint lab will build capabilities and develop research outcomes and impactful tools that can be used to support Singapore’s public sector and industries. SMU Provost Professor Timothy Clark said that computational tools can generate insights over enormous volumes of observed digital content. However, complementary research in disciplines such as psychology and urban sociology are needed to understand the underlying affective and cognitive mechanisms by which humans generate and consume such content. “Our faculty members participating in the Joint Lab are experts in social media analysis, network analysis, natural language processing, machine learning, and AI. They also have extensive experience in Computational Social Science research into diverse societal challenges… I am confident that our dynamic partnership will allow us to deliver impactful research outcomes to tackle key societal challenges in Singapore and the region.”
