Dr Noeleen Heyzer, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and SMU’s Lee Kong Chian Distinguished Fellow, has been appointed as the new special envoy to Myanmar. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made this announcement on 25 October and she will replace Christine Schraner Burgener of Switzerland for this role. Dr Heyzer is currently a member of the UN Secretary-General’s High Level Advisory Board on Mediation, which supports specific mediation efforts around the world.
