In a commentary, Benjamin Tham and Josephine Seah, Research Associates at the SMU Centre for AI and Data Governance, examined the various tools that can be used to fight fake news other than the newly passed Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (Pofma). They opined that Pofma is just the starting point in the war against falsehoods and this should be complemented by more efficient targeting of AI-generated falsehoods through procedural measures, regular reviews of these measures to keep up with the challenges as well as convening a select committee to allow various interest groups and stakeholders to make representations. Ultimately, they concluded that “the responsibility to confront fake news, as the Pofma debates remind us, is societal”.
