Executive Director of the Lien Centre for Social Innovation and SMU Adjunct Professor of Social Entrepreneurship Jonathan Chang examined the role of social entrepreneurship in Singapore. He believes that social enterprises are profit-driven operating under a hybrid model of a revenue-generating mindset and a deep commitment to address one or more social issues. He stressed that in the early stages of running a social enterprise, an entrepreneur should focus on achieving financial sustainability first, before trying to solve social issues. He suggested they should implement an assessment tool that evaluates the performance of their social impact and develop a social impact sustainability mechanism to ensure that benefactors have enough tools and resources to stand on their own in the long run.
