SMU Grow believes that “ugly” produce is worth saving. Working with B3, SMU Grow holds a Save The Uglies market every Friday – encouraging students, faculty, and the public to purchase imperfect fruits and vegetables at discounted rates. Ugly Food – an initiative started by SMU staff Bernadette Toh three and a half years ago – also offers a three-course dining experience for customers every four months. Ms Toh noted that although the market starts only at 11am, a group of loyal followers would come early to queue and faculty would even get their parents or children to buy for them when they cannot make it down. SMU Grow is part of a university-wide movement involving staff, faculty, tenants and students, which aims to get the community to think about sustainability issues.
