In a commentary, SMU Lien Centre for Social Innovation Executive Director Jonathan Chang opined that companies like Airbnb, in their quest to expand and positively impact people’s lives, should first abide by the country’s rules they operate in. He suggested that such companies should work with the authorities and policymakers to craft products and services that are more equitable for consumers or work towards shifting laws that are outdated. They can then join forces with non-profit organisations to address some of the social issues faced by the community. Ultimately, the longevity of such social missions will depend on the longevity of their business and being socially responsible ought to be the foundation of all enterprises.
