SMU has partnered with tech firm Trampolene to develop the "SmartBFA" mobile app, which would be trialed at Bukit Panjang soon. Supported by SG Enable, it is the first barrier-free app in Singapore, which helps users with mobility issues to take the shortest course to their destination. It also marks out barrier-free facilities within the estate. SMU Assistant Professor of Information Systems Tan Hwee Xian, who is a co-investigator of the project, said in an interview that she hoped that they would be able to collect more info from 260 volunteers by the end of the year so as to complete the barrier-free routes within the estate, thereby facilitating the movement of the app’s users in Bukit Panjang which has 400 HDB blocks. She added that it is hoped that the use of the app will be expanded to the rest of the country to benefit more people.
