Make innovation work by overcoming the ingroup-outgroup bias

In a commentary, Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources Thomas Menkhoff, who is also the Academic Director of SMU's Master of Science in Innovation programme opined that the Leader-Member Exchange theory still holds relevance in today’s business world dynamics and provides a good insight into good leadership principles. He advised innovation leaders to “energise”, “engage” and “enable” followers in order to make the organisation more innovative and avoid what innovation expert Scott Anthony has termed “innovation inbreeding”. He also suggested that subordinates ignore the in-group and out-group bias by initiating their own personal “meet-the-boss session” with their leaders to create a more positive working environment.
