Living the life less exam-ined

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan questioned if academic success was being prioritised over learning as a lifelong skill and way of life. He felt that all stakeholders, especially parents, educators and employers should rethink the role that our education system plays in our competitive society. While it is natural for parents to want the best for their children, “how we get there (the journey) is just as important as the eventual outcome (the destination)”. Associate Prof Tan added that although our education system has played an important role in Singapore’s transformation, the emphasis on examination success has also consumed many households. He urged all Singaporeans to view “learning as a craft to be learned and continually honed, a lifelong habit in which work, growth and satisfaction are intertwined.”
