More places for university students to intern when on overseas exchange

In an interview about overseas internship opportunities, SMU Director of the Dato’ Kho Hui Meng Career Centre Sim Cher Young said,” While the main focus is on local internships, we do encourage students to seek opportunities to go on overseas internships as this can be a great learning experience. Some students who may be keen on an international experience and believe that it will add value to their profile, do invest time and effort in sourcing for an overseas internship opportunity either on their own or with support from our career centre.  However, overseas internships has its own set of challenges such as having to cover travel and living expenses with low stipends and visa restrictions.”

One such example is SMU accountancy and economics undergraduate, 25-year old Benjamin Wong who successfully clinched an overseas internship with Four Seasons Hotel in Maldives via Skype and started his five-month internship in April. During his internship, he was given job attachment opportunities in various departments including housekeeping, front desk as well as with the hotel’s water sports centre.
