In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan shared his views on how national service has evolved since 50 years ago to become the cornerstone of our defence and security today. Associate Prof Tan also noted the importance of national service and how it is closely linked to our security, history and independence. To commemorate 50 years of national service, NS50 has been introduced as a way to promote awareness and also to renew the importance and role of national service in Singapore. Associate Prof Tan added that the theme "From My Generation to Yours" symbolises how national service is a heritage that transcends generations and fosters national solidarity, and is also a display of commitment between generations. He concluded that being a Singaporean comes with much unique significance, and that we are the best and only defenders of our sovereignty and the way we wish to live.
