Paralympics: Yip Pin Xiu wins 2nd gold at Rio Games, says 'words cannot describe how I feel now'

SMU School of Social Sciences undergraduate and national para-swimmer Yip Pin Xiu etched her name into the record books this morning (Singapore time) when she became the first Singaporean to win multiple gold medals at the Paralympic Games. Pin Xiu clinched gold in the women's 50m backstroke S2 event at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in Rio. President Tony Tan Keng Yam praised Yip on her resilience and tenacity. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also congratulated Yip in a Facebook post. Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu, who is in Rio to support the athletes, posted a group picture of Pin Xiu, her coach and parents. "Emotional moment when life goal is met," she wrote. In the mixed zone after her race, Pin Xiu expressed her disbelief at winning the gold medal. "Words cannot describe how I feel now. There're mixed emotions - happiness, relief and gratitude. "I'm happy about the race, I'm so grateful for the team, for Singaporeans supporting us. The support they have shown us in the past week has been enormous,” she said.
