Community service raises students’ awareness

SMU Lee Kong Chian School of Business student Mohamed Syuaib Khan was featured in a Berita Harian article where he shared his personal experience in community service work. He noted that being involved in community service work has definitely increased his awareness and sensitivity towards the needy and less privileged in society, including those with mental illnesses. He was among 300 SMU students involved in the starringSMU, a project which helped to raise public awareness and funds for the needy. This is not the only project by SMU students in their effort to give back at least 80 hours of community service as part of their graduation requirement at SMU, which was incepted in 2000. Two other student-led projects – Inspirar and Kidleidoscope – were organised by the University in June and July. Through Inspirar, the students interacted with the elderly and encouraged healthy and active ageing. In Kidleidoscope, SMU students inspired underprivileged children and organised activities to build self-confidence so as to inspire them to achieve their dreams.
