Curiosity prompts creation of online Singlish dictionary

SMU Assistant Professor of Law Jack Lee was featured in a National Day 2016 Special, where he shared his journey behind the creation of A Dictionary of Singlish and Singapore English, an online resource he set up in 2004 after returning from the University College London with a Master of Laws. To do this, he read up and formulated definitions and pronunciations for the terms, and even tried to trace their etymology — the origin of words and how their meanings have evolved. Assistant Prof Lee stressed, however, that the dictionary — which has more than 1,200 entries — was meant to be “a fun project”, given that he is not an expert. “I thought that it would be an interesting resource for people who were, maybe, not so familiar with Singlish words like me, and who wanted to find out something about what they meant,” he added.
