Going Beyond and Enduring Bilateral Relationship for the Regional Good

In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan shared his views on the Singapore-United States relation and its impact on the region. He also discussed the complementary nature of the economies of both countries, as well as the close collaboration on the political front. Associate Prof Tan highlighted that with China’s President Xi Jinping calling for a “new form of great-power relationship”, Singapore’s insights on US-China engagement in the region can be immensely helpful to both powers. He noted that this niche role is relevant in providing China and the US with the benefit of impartial analysis and frank counsel. He also said that Singapore can promote a better understanding between both countries as the global political, security, and economic architecture seeks a new equilibrium. Hence, Prime Minister Lee’s official visit to the United States holds huge importance not only to Singapore but the region as well.
