In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan called for businesses and individuals to reflect and rethink the reasons behind corporate philanthropy. He hopes that more companies would engage in corporate philanthropy with the genuine aim of contributing back to society, instead of treating it as a marketing gimmick to gain greater publicity. Associate Prof Tan noted that the most important question to be answered is how the act of giving can bring about positive changes to the beneficiaries, on top of highlighting that giving assistance to charities is not limited to monetary donations, but can also include volunteering one’s time and expertise.
