Researcher studies how language shapes our ability to process information

SMU Assistant Professor of Psychology Yang Hwajin was featured in an article where she shared her research interest in bilingualism and language studies. She noted that she was “impressed by the high extent of bilingualism in Singapore, which is a contrast to her homeland of South Korea where most of the population is monolingual”. Through her research, Assistant Prof Yang hopes to demonstrate the benefits of bilingualism to individuals who do not demonstrate cognitive impairment, and explore the biology behind second language acquisition – specifically, do bilingual speakers exhibit different patterns in their brain anatomy and physiology?
