Let's not forget minority shareholders

SMU Associate Professor of Accounting (Practice) Wang Jiwei was featured for his research aiming to protect minority investors through better information and corporate governance. Together with colleagues from universities in China, Associate Prof Wang formulated a model to compare the quality of assets that the parent company and subsidiary exchanged, and applied it to a sample of assets exchanges by listed companies on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. His team found high levels of related party transactions around the time of initial public offerings. As such, Associate Prof Wang is developing an index of common features to watch out for in order to safeguard the interests of minority shareholders.
