Ho Kwon Ping: Followers in a diverse society will not follow blindly; leaders must engage with the people

Chairman of the SMU Board of Trustees and Executive Chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings Ho Kwon Ping delivered his fifth and final lecture as the Institute of Policy Studies' S R Nathan Fellow. His lecture on April 9, in the series entitled “Singapore: The Next Fifty Years”, examined the evolution of Singapore society and national identity. Mr Ho said that Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s recent passing serves as a poignant reminder on how it is now time for Singapore to forge its own identity based on a collective of diverse identities and histories. He also said that it is crucial for Singapore’s continuing survival and well-being, to keep its borders open to the outside world as well as to maintain social mobility within. Mr Ho identified three broad tasks to achieve this – strengthening the cohesive diversity that underpins our identity; improve social mobility and a culture of egalitarianism; and build a collaborative mode of governance and an information-rich society.
