SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that Mr Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) made an immeasurable impact on Singapore's nation building, influencing every aspect of life for Singaporeans. However, in the post-LKY era, politics will change and the political model will have to be adapted. The one-party dominant system will weaken as political views become more diverse – while the good-governance model is accepted, the post-independence electorate will be less receptive to strong-arm leadership. Good governance will also be enhanced with healthy checks and balances, inter-party competition and the existence of a vibrant opposition. Demands for more political competition and diversity will also increase.
