The passing of Lee Kuan Yew – three questions on Singapore's future

Commenting on whether an opposition party will ever rule, SMU Associate Professor of Law and former Nominated MP Eugene Tan remarked that while Singapore’s politics have been progressively becoming more open, he believes that we will never develop into a democracy like that of the western world. However, having two or more democratic parties is unavoidable in time to come. On whether the People’s Action Party will split, he said that there are no traces showing major differences for the party to divide into two, but it is possible for it to harbour differences within. Lastly, on the issue of whether Singapore’s international influence will weaken, he said that Lee Kuan Yew is irreplaceable; however, it is unfair to compare Lee Hsien Loong and Goh Chok Tong with him
