Bilingualism and the brain

SMU Assistant Professor of Psychology Yang Hwajin, who is a cognitive and developmental psychologist, was featured for her research on bilingualism and how language shapes people’s ability to process information. Assistant Prof Yang finds Singapore a fertile ground to study the relationship between multilingualism and cognition, and one of her studies saw her examine the impact of being raised in a bilingual versus monolingual household for children of low economic status. Through her research, she hopes to demonstrate the benefits of bilingualism to individuals who do not demonstrate cognitive impairment. She also hopes to explore the biology behind language acquisition, in particular brain anatomy and physiology.
