SMU and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 25 November 2014 to promote research and innovation for a clean and green Next Generation Port.

The MOU was signed by Professor Steven Miller, SMU's Vice Provost (Research) and Dean (School of Information Systems), and MPA’s Chief Executive Mr Andrew Tan at the 2nd Singapore Registry of Ships Forum organised by MPA and attended by some 250 senior maritime professionals and partners from Institutes of Higher Learning.

Mr Stephan Schablinski, Director of DHL-SMU Green Transformation Lab, spoke about the Lab’s expertise in sustainable practices and capability in logistics supply chains at the forum.

The MOU outlines areas for collaboration on research and development (R&D) between MPA and SMU. Topics include: clean energy and environment, energy management, simulation and data analytics for maritime applications that support Singapore's position as an efficient, green and sustainable port. The MOU extends beyond R&D and covers partnerships in education, public outreach programmes, as well as the provision of advisory services by SMU.

Professor Steven Miller commented, "As Singapore transitions to a world-leading Green Port, aligning data analytics with managerial decision-making to achieve unprecedented levels of resource usage efficiency in support of Green Port operations is a necessary competitive and political requirement, and a really tough challenge. SMU is delighted to work with MPA towards this ambitious goal.

“SMU’s partnership with DHL to develop a transport and logistics-focused carbon accounting framework and support tools through our joint Green Transformation Lab, and the ongoing work by our School of Information Systems to create intelligent decision support systems for improving decision-making and resource utilisation in various public sector, logistics, and urban management settings, give us the ability to support MPA and their network of maritime industry partners in making progress towards this goal.”
