Singaporeans’ complex emotional ties with Lee Kuan Yew

SMU Associate Professor of Law and former Nominated MP Eugene Tan said that some people reserve their comments on Mr Lee Kuan Yew out of respect for Mr Lee. He added that Singaporeans will eventually reflect on the many contributions by Mr Lee, and analyse the mistakes made. According to Prof Tan, the strongman leadership style of the Lee Kuan Yew government in the past resulted in political apathy among Singaporeans. He said that although more Singaporeans are interested in political issues now, their knowledge and discussion are still not mature enough. He felt that the younger generation have higher expectations of the government compared to the older generation, and this presents Mr Lee’s successors with an even more difficult task. He said that during Mr Lee’s time, the goal was very clear – to build Singapore into a successful country. But having now achieved success, maintaining high-quality growth is the new challenge.
