When democracies fail to deliver

In a commentary, SMU Adjunct Professor Joergen Oerstroem Moeller wrote that a schism between the ability to deliver and freedom has resulted in the possibility of people being disillusioned with democracy, which may steer them towards regimes that do not respect fundamental rights of freedom. He discussed examples of failed democracies, as well as problems faced by more established democracies. In conclusion, Prof Moeller highlighted that democracy must convince citizens that it can guarantee fundamental rights of freedom and deliver human security, economic well-being, and a sense of social fairness.
