SMU reduces water usage

SMU has obtained 50 per cent support from PUB’s Water Efficiency Fund to set up a $17,000 water usage management system. The University has a committee in place to monitor water consumption, conduct regular reviews and independent audits. SMU has also applied to the Fund to install meters in different locations within the campus so as to have a clear picture of water consumption. SMU Senior Vice President for Finance & Administration Mr Sim Teow Hong said that given the size of the University, SMU needs a systematic way of analysing and understanding water usage, and zeroing in on areas where SMU can improve water usage and reduce waste so as to save water. The installation of meters cost about $41,500, with 90 per cent funded by PUB. SMU hopes that with the two schemes, water usage can be reduced by 3 per cent every year.
