Emerging xenophobic sentiments a concern for Singapore

In an interview, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that worries about the impact of foreigners on Singapore’s identity and social values, and pressures of competition are reasons behind the xenophobic sentiments. He said that internally, the Singapore Government must persuade Singaporeans that in the long run, the Population White Paper released in 2013 is beneficial to Singapore. Externally, Singapore must convince the international community that its immigration policy remains open to foreign talent. Prof Tan added that the solution is to strengthen the sense of identity and belonging among Singaporeans. While the country continues to welcome foreigners, it should not make Singaporeans feel that their futures have been taken hostage.
