Ambassador-at-large Chan Heng Chee was the Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony for SMU Wee Kim Wee Centre’s International Women’s Forum, which was held yesterday. Prof Chan said in her speech that she does not agree with the use of affirmative action or the mandating of a minimum number to ensure the representation of women in Parliament or other leadership positions. This is because Singapore abides by the meritocracy principle. The forum attracted about 200 academics, students and members of the public who are concerned about this issue.
