SMU congratulates 4 PhD in Information Systems graduates

Freddy Chua
PhD in Information Systems

Freddy Chua will be joining the Social Computing Group of Hewlett Packard Research Labs (HPLabs) at Palo Alto, California, USA upon graduation from the School of Information Systems. Prior to his doctoral education, he received his Bachelor in Computer Science from National University of Singapore. During his doctoral studies, Freddy had the opportunity of visiting Carnegie Mellon University as a Research Scholar and worked as a Research Associate with HPLabs for three months.

His work at HPLabs resulted in the filing of a United States patent which is pending the approval from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

In recognition of his academic achievements, he was awarded the prestigious Presidential Doctoral Fellowship by Singapore Management University in 2012.

During his doctoral programme, Freddy’s research interests focused on the modeling of social networks and measurement of social influence. Other interests include text mining and text summarisation of social media content.

When Freddy joins HPLabs after his graduation, he will look at under-explored research areas that are of interest to the industry and promote the relevance of industry research to academia.

 

Huang Jianhui
PhD in Information Systems

Huang Jianhui is a graduate from the School of Information Systems. Prior to joining SMU, he received his Masters of Economics from the School of Information, Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing and Bachelor of Science from the School of Mathematics and Systems Science, Shandong University in Jinan, China.

Jianhui's research interests include the economics of information technology (IT), IT value co-creation, data analytics and social network. His recent research focuses on pricing strategies of cloud computing services. In 2012, his work entitled ‘The Pricing Model of Cloud Computing Services’, in collaboration with Assistant Professor of Information Systems at SMU, Dan Ma, won the Best Doctoral Research Paper Award in the 14th Annual International Conference on Electronic Commerce.  In 2010, another work of his entitled ‘Are They Valued by the Board? An Investigation of Relative Performance Evaluation of Chief Information Officers’, in collaboration with Dr Ling Liu and Dr Nan Hu (both Assistant Professors from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire at time of collaboration) won the Distinguished Paper Award in the 46th Annual Midwest Business Administration Association International Conference.



Lindawati
PhD in Information Systems

Lindawati joined The Logistics Institute Asia Pacific (TLI-AP) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) as a research staff in September 2013. In TLI-AP, she focuses on initiating and conducting research in urban logistics and supply chain. Prior to that, in 2012-2013, she was a research engineer at the Living Analytics Research Centre (LARC) at the Singapore Management University (SMU) where she worked on analytics for dynamic experiences in theme parks. 

Her research interests lies in analysing, modelling and designing of intelligent systems for supporting business and/or management decision making. For her PhD, she focused on design and parameter configuration of metaheuristics for large-scale optimisation problems.

Lindawati received her Bachelor‘s degree in Computer Science from Bina Nusantara University (Indonesia) and her Master’s degree in Information Technology  from  University of Indonesia.

 

Tan Kar Way
PhD in Information Systems

Tan Kar Way is currently a professional staff member of the Singapore Management University’s School of Information Systems (SIS). She serves as an interim Academic Director of the Green Transformation Lab (a DHL-Singapore Management University collaboration), linking it with the university’s education, practice and research initiatives. In addition, she supervises and coaches SIS's students in their final year application projects.

Kar Way's research interests are in applied research spanning cross-disciplinary domains of intelligent decision support and business process management. In particular, she applies her research expertise in healthcare and logistics processes. She has co-authored the book ‘Aligning IT Solutions with Business Processes’, published by Pearson (Prentice Hall).
