To mark the 14th anniversary of SMU, its students designed a lion mascot named SmooSmoo and had it printed on 2,500 NETS FlashPay cards, which will be distributed as complimentary gifts to faculty and students.  A lion was chosen as the mascot for this year's celebration as the Merlion is a symbol of Singapore, and the university logo also features a lion. Furthermore, the theme for this year’s celebration is “Made-in-Singapore”.
