Why a riot by foreign workers in Singapore caused much unease

In an interview, SMU Associate Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan expressed his concern that the Little India riot is but the tip of the iceberg of problems troubling the foreign workers – including living conditions, inequality between the rights of employers and foreign workers, dissatisfaction arising from late payment of wages, and even the disdain shown towards foreign workers in Singapore. He said that this ‘isolated incident’ has caused much unease in Singapore and gave much food for thought. He opined that the government should review employers’ attitude towards foreign workers, and added that the government should act to achieve a balance between the benefits brought about by foreign labour and the resultant social costs, so as to minimise the risk of another riot or more violence taking place.
