Do Not Call Registry: Firms can send text, fax

SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that he was disappointed at the exemption order given by the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) on Thursday to businesses that allowed companies to still send text and fax messages to existing customers even if their numbers are listed on the Do Not Call Registry. As an NMP, he had participated in the Parliamentary debate on the Personal Data Protection Act. “To equate the fact that one has an existing relationship to implying that there is ongoing consent... it defeats the whole purpose of the DNC Registry,” he said.
