SMU Associate Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan said that people should not jump to conclusions with regard to the riot in Little India. Rather, the root cause should be identified, especially what caused the foreign workers to react and feel so discontented. He added that while it is understandable that people may be concerned about law and order, as well as security issues, they should not over-react. He said that Singapore will need foreign workers for many years to come and require them to be better integrated into local society, so it needs to understand the reason for their violent reaction. After all, most of them are law-abiding.
