Harsh Awakening One Winter to Financial Reality

Academic's first month as an overseas undergrad taught him value of budgeting and planning

SMU Associate Professor of Finance Jeremy Goh's experience in the harsh winter when he first arrived in the US for his undergraduate study left its mark on him. He quickly spent his first US$500 on essentials that he had not budgeted for due to his lack of planning. He eventually spent close to 20 years in the US, studying for the first nine and teaching at various universities for the next 10 years before returning to Singapore in 2001. Having studied topics ranging from management to economics and finance, Associate Prof Goh realised that it was important for people to invest their money based on their life cycle.
