Academics think Singaporeans’ disappointment with government stems from high expectations

SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan was of the view that Singaporeans expressed disappointment with their government in a survey due to their high expectations. The survey was conducted by Taiwan’s Vision magazine in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore regarding the people’s satisfaction level with their government’s performance. Associate Prof Tan opined that it would be narrow-minded of Singaporeans to conclude that the government is performing worse as a result of the problems related to immigration, inflation, transport and a spate of corruption cases over the past two years. He believed that the survey was a meaningful one as it showed Singaporeans that the Chinese in other countries have a high regard for Singapore, so Singaporeans should re-examine their own expectations.
