Innovative pedagogy and cutting-edge research are cornerstones of SMU’s core competencies and therefore the very highest standards are set for SMU’s awards in these areas. The faculty awards for 2013 were announced and presented on 20 September in the Ngee Ann Kong Si Auditorium. SMU President, Professor Arnoud De Meyer; Provost and Deputy President, Academic Affairs Professor Rajendra Srivastava; Vice President and Vice Provost, Undergraduate, Dean, School of Accountancy, Professor Pang Yang Hoon; Vice Provost, Research, Dean, School of Information Systems, Professor Steven Miller; the Deans of the four other schools and; Dean of Postgraduate Professional Programmes and Director of the Centre for Management Practice, Professor Philip Zerrillo were all there to honour the winners.

The SMU Teaching and Research Excellence Awards celebration was jointly organised by the Centre for Teaching Excellence and Office of Research. The Teaching Excellence Awards recipients were selected by the Faculty Advisory Committee for Teaching and Learning (FACTL) after reviewing evidences of their teaching performance, and contributions to the scholarship of teaching and learning

A new Distinguished Educator Award was introduced this year and awarded to the recently retired Associate Professor Emeritus Michael Gan Tin Hua of the School of Accountancy. Professor Pang read a glowing citation about Professor Gan’s contributions not only to SMU’s School of Accountancy but also to education and the accounting profession in Singapore. Professor Pang also congratulated SMU’s faculty on winning two external awards. The first was the Teradata University Network (TUN) Teaching Innovation Award 2013 by Associate Professor Michelle Cheong and Instructor Mr Murphy Choy of the School of Information Systems, for their submission on a business analytics case study. The second was the CEEMAN Champions’ Award 2013, won by Associate Professor Seow Poh Sun and Senior Lecturer Wong Suay Peng of the School of Accountancy. Their mobile learning application SMU Accounting Challenge (ACE) was selected as co-winner in the Teaching category.

Also launched at SMU’s faculty awards this year were awards to honour faculty who have contributed to excellence in teaching in SMU’s Postgraduate Professional Programmes and Executive Development Programmes. The awards were presented by Professor Zerrillo. The recipients of the awards were selected by the Evaluation Committee after they had reviewed their teaching performances and contributions to scholarship of teaching and learning. The committee comprised of Professor Rajendra Srivastava; Professor Philip Zerrillo; Professor Francis Koh, Vice Provost (Special Projects); and Steve Wyatt, Executive Director of SMU Executive Development.
