Aung San Suu Kyi hopes for national reconciliation

During her visit to Singapore on 22 September, Aung San Suu Kyi said that Myanmar needed to achieve national reconciliation in order to continue its progress. In her speech delivered at SMU, she touched on the current situation in Myanmar. On the issue of Myanmar being constantly plagued by ethnic troubles, she stressed that only having dialogues with the minority groups is not enough, military and political leaders of all parties have to reach a settlement and work together for the sake of the country. She said that reconciliation does not only apply between different ethnic groups, but also between the people of Myanmar who yearn for democracy and the government. Over the past year, sectarian violence between the Buddhists and Muslims have resulted in 237 deaths and left 150,000 people homeless. Aung San Suu Kyi returns home on 23 Sep after a 4-day trip to Singapore.
