The obligation to serve National Service (NS) means that males who are eligible for university studies fall two years behind their female counterparts in their education and career track. This disadvantage will be eased come January, with NUS launching a programme that will allow male students to take selected courses and earn academic credits ahead of their matriculation. Some 2,600 NSmen who will be matriculating in August will be eligible for enrolment in this programme. At SMU, since Academic Year 2006/07, full-time NSmen have been able to take courses during the summer term before matriculation to earn academic credits.
