Minister of Education Heng Swee Keat had praised SMU for producing not only good students and workers, but also graduates who give back to the community. He was speaking at the university's convocation ceremony held at Resorts World Sentosa on Thursday. SMU is the only university in Singapore that requires students to complete 80 hours of community service before they can graduate. In his speech, Minister Heng also highlighted SMU's achievements since its founding.
