Judgment upholds the rule of law

SMU Associate Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan shared his views about the Court of Appeal (CA) ruling last week which required the Prime Minister to call for an election to fill a vacated parliamentary seat within a reasonable time. Associate Prof Tan said that he was delighted with the ruling, and hoped that this might encourage more Singaporeans to challenge laws and execute actions they think are unconstitutional or are expressions of unfettered power. On the significance of the ruling, he added that although clarity had been given to the meaning of Article 49 of the Constitution, and that the CA had upheld the centrality of the rule of law, the operating considerations have not been changed significantly.
