On the Shane Todd case, SMU Associate Professor of Political Science John Donaldson commented that the foreign media has focused on it as there were some aspects which were not very apparent, and because the parents of Shane Todd had engaged certain prominent politicians to comment on the case. He added that the American Embassy had noted in its most recent statement that Singapore’s legal system had been fair and transparent. As such, Associate Prof Donaldson was of the opinion that the case would not affect bilateral relations between US and Singapore.
