Singapore's media regulators had recently imposed new licensing requirements for online news websites, a move that had sparked a rare mass protest. SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan shared his views that it was an overreaction on the part of the online community but their concerns were legitimate. Assistant Prof Tan added that “It is difficult for the government to move away from a light touch regime.”
