Singaporeans rally against new govt rules for websites

On the rally to protest against the new government licensing rules, which was held at the Speakers’ Corner at Hong Lim Park on Saturday, SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan said that to be more effective, Singapore's blogging community must gain the support of the majority of Singaporeans who are focused on bread and butter issues such as the high cost of living and immigration. "Otherwise, such protests, while exuberant and celebrated by the participants and organisers as standing up to the government, will strike most Singaporeans as being overly self-indulgent," he said. Assistant Prof Tan also said that the efficacy of consultations is limited as "the government believes in the utility and virtue of regulation, while the online community is dead against any regulation".
